What did you do with your used Christmas tree this year?
The people of Le Goulet have a creative way of reusing them. The small village in the Acadian Peninsula uses old Christmas trees as part of a dune restoration project it launched in 2013. The initiative consists of using different recycled materials from the village, including used pines and douglas fir, branches, and lobster cages, to lower the impact of erosion and coastal floods on surrounding dunes.
The ultimate goal of the project is to mitigate the effects of climate change on the dunes and diminish the effects of flooding on the village. Materials are organized in a manner to act as a natural barrier for the dunes. The project, which receives funding from the provincial government, currently stretches on approximately 2.7 kilometers of coastal habitat.
What a great use for Christmas trees once the holidays have passed! Does your municipality collect Christmas trees? Let us know!
