Celebrate Canada this Earth Day 2016

By Corey Robichaud

A normal Earth Day for most is just another reminder to call Mother Earth once a year. At our best, it’s a time to reflect on our fragile relationship with nature and make amends for the way we neglect her every day — the little nudge we need to disconnect the Netflix stream and give gardening some serious thought.

But Earth Day 2016, be proud. Plant a tree, even. We’re about to witness a landmark event in environmental history, one that will set the stage for the new century of renewable energy.

On April 22nd, the first legally binding global climate protection treaty aimed at keeping temperatures from rising more 2°C is to be signed by Canada, the United States, China and over 120 countries around the Globe.

When Prime Minister Trudeau steps up to sign on to the 2015 Paris Treaty, at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, you won’t be the only Canadian to flush with pride and dance with joy.

Already we’re seeing the changes. This year the federal government took the first steps towards repairing our nation’s tarnished environmental record. With its first budget just last month, it turned its attention to developing new and exciting clean technologies, green infrastructure and exciting job opportunities.

This year we saw electric cars become trendy and affordable and in Santa Monica, crowds of people shocked the world by lining up for their chance to buy Tesla Motors’ new Tesla Model 3.

The world is definitely changing. So join with the rest of the world this Earth day and celebrate — because we’re in it together.
