On July 31, the Conservation Council’s Fundy Baykeeper Matt Abbott submitted recommendations to the National Advisory Panel on Marine Protected Area Standards. The submission recommends protection and process standards that should be adopted in Canadian Marine Protected Area policy, to improve the effectiveness and fairness of protections for our marine environment in New Brunswick.
Canada’s Marine Protection Area primary goal is “to provide long-term protection of marine biodiversity, ecosystem function and special natural features.” Regardless of the specific conservation objectives of individual MPAs, industrial activities threaten this overarching goal and, as such, should not be permitted within MPAs.
The submission outlines rationale for adopting protection standards, and provides recommendations to develop effective protection standards. The Conservation Council wants to make sure MPAs work for everyone in the Bay of Fundy.
