A handful of kids in Campbellton are getting the opportunity to play in the dirt this summer.

The Campbellton Community Garden will be offering a youth entrepreneurial garden program to six children between the ages of 10 and 15.

Bob Ewing is the organizer of this initiative. The idea came to him when he learned that there were kids interested in gardening and wanted to learn more, but were too young to get jobs.

Two garden beds have been dedicated to the project, and there will be a small budget of 150 to 200 dollars for tools. Ewing already has a seed collection, and the supervisors of the program will be volunteers.

The kids will learn about the whole spectrum of gardening- how to select and grow plants, maintaining the garden, and setting up a small market to learn the business side of selling their produce.

Ewing also said he wants the project to teach the kids about where their food comes from, and all the hard work that goes into it.

“While looking after a small garden is nothing like looking after a farm, at least it gets them connected to the earth, the soil, the seeds, the water,” Ewing said to the Campbellton Tribune.

Campbellton Centennial Library, the Restigouche Inclusion Network, and the Inspire Coop have partnered with the Community Garden to help support the project.
