Groups demand sustainable Atlantic energy future, not more pipelines and shale gas

October 3, 2013

Saint John, NB – Energy for Everyone: A summit beyond pipelines and shale gas is bringing people together this week to learn and organize for the sustainable Atlantic energy future we deserve. Below are statements from key participants, including those who also spoke today at the Energy for Everyone press conference.

“The future of our region rests in creating a thriving green economy that takes advantage of our renewable energy resources, stabilizes our electricity costs, and generates good, long-term employment. Let’s direct our time and attention to developing our own domestic energy resources here in New Brunswick and Atlantic Canada, rather than helping Alberta develop their oil sands.” – Catherine Abreu, Regional Coordinator with the Atlantic Canada Sustainable Energy Coalition.

“Hampton Water First is pleased to be participating in this event and to have an opportunity to share and explore a positive vision of what our province could become.” – Chris Rendell, Hampton Water First.

“My language and my identity come from the land of my ancestors, not from the government of Canada. All my relations.” – Alma Brooks, member of the Maliseet Grand Council from Saint Mary’s First Nation.

“Our thoughts and solidarity are with the courageous people of Elsipogtog First Nation, who have issued an eviction notice to SWN Resources Canada to stop shale gas exploration on their traditional territories. Fracked gas and tar sands pipelines like TransCanada’s Energy East aren’t the future—they’re the past. The Atlantic Energy Summit promotes this extreme energy to oil and gas industry insiders, but Harper and the industry need to get used to taking ‘no’ for an answer.” – *Maude Barlow*, national chairperson of the Council of Canadians and author of the recently published /Blue Future: Protecting Water for People and the Planet Forever

“With our leaders focused so resolutely on maintaining the status quo of fossil fuel development at all costs, the Energy for Everyone Summit provides a much needed opportunity for citizens to continue working to build responsible energy solutions that work for people and the planet.” – Sharon Murphy, CCNB.
