On this World Oceans Day, millions of people from across our blue planet will join together to celebrate our oceans, including New Brunswickers’ beloved Atlantic Ocean.
World Oceans Day has been celebrated every year on June 8 after thousands of organizations signed a global petition in 2008 to secure the official recognition from the United Nations. This celebration brings together citizens, organizations, schools, businesses, recreation and tourism industries, governments, and more, to raise awareness for all of the things that our oceans do for us, and all of the things we can do to help our oceans.
In New Brunswick, we are fortunate to have 5,500 kilometres of beautiful coastline that hugs the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean is an interconnected part of countless New Brunswickers’ livelihoods and has played a significant role in shaping our culture and history. We rely on our marine waters to support a diversity of life while also providing a safe place for fisheries, recreation, and tourism activities. After all, is there anything better than cooling off on a hot summer day with your family and friends at one of our many beautiful beaches?
Unfortunately, our oceans are not immune to global pressures and they continue to experience problems mostly related to pollution, development, lack of protection, and climate change. It can be overwhelming stuff but the important thing to remember is that for us at the Conservation Council, every day is World Oceans Day. Through our Marine Protection Program and Fundy Baykeeper, we work year-round with other organizations, fishers associations, government agencies, and coastal communities to solve the challenges facing our marine environment.
Help us help the ocean
If you’re wondering how you can help support the marine waters in your neck of the woods, whether it be the Bay of Chaleur, Northumberland Strait, or the Bay of Fundy, we’ve got you covered!
For the month of June, we are participating in CanadaHelps’ Great Canadian Giving Challenge. Each donation of $3 or more enters the Conservation Council in a draw to win an additional $10,000 donation.
Your contribution, no matter the amount, will help us continue our advocacy for beautiful, vibrant and thriving marine environments.
Set up your $3 monthly donation now – it only takes a minute!
It’s also not too late to help the Bay of Fundy by supporting our Virtual Tour to Celebrate and Protect the Bay of Fundy. With a virtual tour, we will be able to show media, politicians, and the public just why the Bay of Fundy is so important!
- For every dollar donated to our Virtual Tour of the Bay of Fundy, Aveda Atlantic will match it 1:1, up to $1,500!
- The first 10 people to donate $200 or more will receive a free trip from Quoddy Link Marine.
- Donations of $100 will receive a free, unframed, print from Nick Hawkins Photography.
By helping support our Marine Protection Program and Fundy Baykeeper, you can get out and enjoy your World Oceans Day, while we continue to accomplish great things for our beloved Atlantic Ocean.
