For Immediate Release
300 growers and producers already listed
Fredericton — Just in time for the harvest seasson, the Conservation Council of New Brunswick (CCNB) today released its new and improved BuyLocal NB website where you can find tasty locally grown vegetables, yummy fresh meat and sustainably produced seafood.
The BuyLocal website at wwwbuylocalnb.ca is a user friendly searchable database of over 300 local growers, producers and retailers where you can find sources of local food and products, farm experiences, and retailers close to you. Visitors to the website can also learn more about the benefits of buying local, which include:
- Supporting the provincial economy and the family farm;
- Keeping NB money in NB by circulating our food dollars locally;
- Protecting the environment by decreasing transportation greenhouse gas emissions;
- Strengthening our communities by getting to know your farmer and where your food comes from; and
- Proactively increasing our public health by providing better access to healthy nutritious food
CCNB originally launched its Buy Local NB initiative in 2009 and developed an online food directory in 2011. It became one of CCNB’s most popular campaigns; local foodie chefs and retailers began using it to source their products and ingredients.
“We’ve taken the time to modernize the directory to keep up with technology and consumer needs”, says Stephanie Merrill, CCNB’s project manager for BuyLocalNB. “The response from farmers and retailers of local food has been generous. We have a good number already participating and more coming in each day. We are looking forward to growing the inventory”, says Merrill.
The BuyLocal NB project is financially supported by the Saint John Community Foundation, the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
Our partners in generous creativity, counsel and advice are the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick, the National Farmers Union in New Brunswick, The New Brunswick Food Security Action Network, Atlantic Canada Organic Regional Network, and Real Foods Connections.
Growers, producers, retailers and agri-tourism operators can add their products and services to the inventory by sending their information through the “Add your Business” form directly on the website.
CCNB is working on following this new tool with a mobile app.
