The Conservation Council is speaking out and calling on New Brunswickers to speak up following claims from the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy Development, Mike Holland, that the province will not meet the federal government’s 2030 coal phase out mandate.
In a letter sent July 21, 2021, we called on the Minister to commit to building a modern electricity system for New Brunswickers that is affordable, environmentally sustainable, and reliable. In it, we laid out recommendations on how the government can achieve an electricity system powered by 80 per cent renewable energy by 2030.
We know this is what New Brunswickers want. In our June 2021 survey on electricity issues, 70 per cent of New Brunswickers said they want the province to close coal plants and replace the electricity with renewable energy such as solar and wind generated in our province.
Use our letter-writing tool below to have your say. Tell Minister Holland you know we can achieve 80 per cent renewables by the end of the decade, and you want to see a plan from him to make it happen.
Why renewables? Check out the resources below to see how and why a renewable energy future in New Brunswick is possible and necessary to help the planet avoid dangerous levels of global heating.
We also recently submitted feedback on the province’s proposal to secure an equivalency agreement with the federal government that would allow it to burn coal at the Belledune Generating Station beyond the feds’ 2030 coal phase out mandate. Read that submission here. We followed our submission with a letter to the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change asking him to reject New Brunswick’s proposal. Read that letter here.
